Iverson's ex asks judge to order lump sum child support payment

In Lake County, as well as throughout the U.S., when two parents decide not to raise their child together, they may seek the assistance of a family law court to create a child support agreement. Unless a parent chooses to relinquish their parental rights, they are expected to comply with the court’s order and to help meet the financial needs of raising their child.

According to reports, Allen Iverson’s ex-wife recently asked a judge to order him to pay the remainder of his court ordered child support payments to her in one lump sum. The former NBA all-star reportedly fell behind recently on his obligations and a judge ordered him to pay the $40,000 he owed or be sent to jail. His ex claims the request was a measure to prevent him from becoming delinquent again in the future and plans to create a trust for their five children.

The amount of his monthly payments was not reported, but, altogether, he would reportedly owe $1.27 million if a judge grants his ex-wife’s request. The total includes monthly payments through the year 2026, when the youngest of his children will turn 18. No details were reported regarding the precedents for the judge to make such an order.

If you are involved in a child support dispute, or if you are having difficulties making your court ordered payments, it may be of benefit to consult with an experienced attorney. A lawyer can explain your options, as well as answer any questions or address any concerns that you may have.
