How age may impact divorce

When a couple gets married in Illinois, there is always some chance no matter how slight that they could someday get divorced. Many things can factor into whether or not a couple remains married for life or whether they part ways before that happens. Researchers have followed marriage and divorce trends for some time and evaluated different factors that influence the health of a marriage or its risk of divorce.

A new report issued by a University of Utah sociologist sheds new light on how the age at which people get married may play into their risk of getting divorced. In the past, it was believed that waiting until after 30 to get married was a better bet when trying to reduce the chance of divorce. Now, however, that does not appear to be the case. Marriages between people in their late 20s have the lowest divorce rate. This is based upon data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Survey of Family Growth.

The information shows that the divorce risk follows something of a bell curve, going steadily down from the teen years until just before 30. From there it ticks up at a constant rate. The divorce risk for someone in their early 40s is similar to that of a 20-year-old person. The divorce risk for someone aged 25 is similar to that of someone approaching 35. Overall, the national divorce rate is continuing to decline as it has been doing since the 1980s, regardless of age.

Certainly age is just one thing that can contribute to a good marriage or a divorce. People who have concerns about getting divorced may wish to consult with an experienced attorney before any action is taken.
