Jolie-Pitt custody request brings attention to age and impact

Child custody is often the catalyst for issues during divorce procedures in Illinois. This is also true when it comes to high-profile divorces, like the one between Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. According to ABC News, Jolie, who filed for the divorce, is not asking for any child support. Instead, her divorce petition focuses on custody of their six children.

Jolie has requested sole physical custody, meaning that she wants the children to live with her, and Pitt would get visitation rights. However, she also asked for joint legal custody, which means they will co-parent the children when it comes to making decisions about their lives.

According to CBS News, in any divorce situation, the focus during a divorce should be on the children and their well-being. The Jolie-Pitt children range in age from 8-year-old twins to the oldest at age 15.  For the younger children, it will be important that Jolie and Pitt make sure they are aware the divorce is not their fault. They need to also avoid saying negative things about the other parent or trying to create a situation where children feel they need to take sides.

Open lines of communication will be important with all the children, but the older children, especially, need to be kept in the loop about what is happening. Pre-teens often become angry and blame one or both parents, while teens tend to want to separate themselves from the situation, an attitude which can lead to rebellious behaviors. The bottom line is to ensure the children feel as secure and comfortable as possible throughout the whole process.
