Why couples get divorced

On Behalf of | Dec 15, 2015 | Divorce |

When getting divorced, Illinois residents understandably get very focused on the logistics of a divorce. Topics like who will get what assets, how debts will be split, what the child custody and parenting time agreement will be and then some become of primary concern. It can be beneficial, however, for spouses to reflect on the reasons for a divorce. Doing so can provide important personal growth and may even help if a future remarriage occurs.

MSN reports a lack of an appropriate level of commitment as the number one reason couples get divorced. Occupying the number two spot on their list and also appearing on a Huffington Post list is poor conflict resolution and, quite simply, too much arguing. Getting married for the wrong reasons or without good preparation can also pave the way for disaster down the road. The fact of the matter is that marriage is hard.

Each person must give up some of their own wishes for the good of the unit yet maintain their individual identities at the same time. In many cases, one or both of these things does not happen. Financial challenges can also negatively impact marriages, leading to additional conflict and a lack of putting the shared vision at the forefront. Marrying at a very young age is also identified as a factor that can be a reason for many divorces.

Abuse and infidelity can and do lead many marriages to end but many of the issues above are more common causes of divorce in the U.S.
